About
General Sir Edward Rathbone, approaching seventy and now retired, lives in the country with his wife Sybil and his ex-batman William Clarke. A young captain in 1916, he fought at the battle of the Somme. In the second world war, he had a desk job.Now he is living a quiet life and writing his memoirs.
And then one day he is visited by a man who was under his command at the Somme. An ordinary private soldier, the name of George Painter, who deserted and was court-martialled and imprisoned. What can he want with the eminent Sir Edward?
In the act of deserting on the road to Popinjay, which was the name the men gave to the town of Poperinge, Private Painter witnessed an incident which if made public will destroy Sir Edward's Life.
