Sofia Kirwan-Baez South American Odyssey

About

Join singer Sofia Kirwan-Baez, pianist Alex Norton, and violist Maggie Lamelas on an exhilarating musical journey across South America. This diverse program highlights the rich blend of folk, classical, and pop traditions that make the region’s music so vibrant. From the hauntingly beautiful El Condor Pasa to Piazzolla's passionate Libertango, the concert will transport you through the heart of Latin American culture.

Sofia, an Anglo-Venezuelan artist praised for her powerful performances, has graced the stages of Wigmore Hall, Longborough Festival Opera, and more. Her versatility spans opera, jazz, and contemporary works. Pianist Alex Norton, known for his sensitive interpretations and technical brilliance, is a sought-after collaborator in both the classical and contemporary music scenes. Violist Maggie Lamelas, a member of the acclaimed Mahler-youth orchestra, brings warmth and depth to the ensemble, complementing the vibrant vocals and piano with her expressive playing.

This concert features iconic songs like Violeta Parra’s Gracias a la Vida, the rhythmic pulse of Carlos Vives’ La Tierra del Olvido, and the Brazilian bossa nova flair of Jobim’s Aguas de Março. Together, these three talented musicians will guide you through an unforgettable evening of music, where genres collide and traditions come alive in a celebration of South American soundscapes.
